Bryn Mawr Film Institute Lecture Series - Pt. 2

Tue November 07, 2017 – 2:00 pm

On the Origin of Cinema
(Lecture only)

Long before Garbo talked, Jolson sang, or Norma Desmond readied for her close-up, there were movies.  Some were scandalous. Some were glorious, and many have been lost to time.  But what remains sheds considerable light on the origins of this form that emerged from the confluence of science, art, commerce, and the Industrial Revolution.  Learn how the movies came to be, and to laugh at, be shocked by, and simply enjoy some of the world’s first motion pictures.

Bryn Mawr Film Institute Lecture Series - Pt. 3

Crossfire (1947)
(Movie and Lecture)

During the relatively comfortable period following WWII, Hollywood once again took on domestic social problems after spending years focused on the more immediate threats aborad.  But filmmakers with controversial political viewpoints, such as director Edward Dmytryk (Murder, My Sweet; The Canine Mutiny), needed to treat lightly this time of HUAC and Joseph McCCarthy.  Join us for an introductory lecture about and screening of Crossfire, a post-war film noir with a social conscience that features Robert Mitchum, Robert Young, Robert Ryan and Gloria Grahame.
